Hellfire Citadel Trinket Discussion

So in HFC there are several trinkets that all have their uses. I’ll discuss each trinket, what it does, how to use it, and when to use it. Most of this will be my own opinions and experiences with each trinket. The rest of my BiS gear lists can be found here.

TLDR: SDI always, Soul Cap for single target, Mirror for many adds, Malicious if SC or Mirror will be too dangerous or difficult to use, Infallible if the boss is a Demon.

Sacred Draenic Incense

Where to get it:

Archimonde

What it does:

You have a 19% (N) to 26% (M+WF) chance to perform a free Rising Sun Kick after each Fists of Fury, Blackout Kick, or normal Rising Sun Kick.

How it works:

When you finish channeling FoF, cast BoK, or cast RSK, you will also do an additional RSK that costs no Chi but comes with all the damage and benefits of a normal RSK. This extra RSK can proc Combo Breaker and applies the RSK debuff. When using Chi Explosion, each Chi used has half the trinket’s chance to proc. This means that with a Heroic SDI (22%) each Chi used will have its own 11% chance to proc. A 4 Chi-Explosion will have 4 chances to proc RSK at 11% each or roughly 40% chance at proccing at least 1 RSK and 0.01% chance to proc 4 free RSK.

When to use it:

All the time!!! This is the OMGWTFBBQ trinket that Rune of Re-Origination was in Throne of Thunder. Its so amazing, many of us didn’t think that it would make it out of the PTR. It can make keeping up the RSK debuff automatic when using Chi Explosion if you have good luck. It can also turn your rotation into a Combo Breaker proc-fest.

Soul Capacitor

Where to get it:

Sorcrethar the Eternal

What it does:

Your melee attacks have a chance to trigger Spirit Shift for 10 sec. While a spirit, your damage dealt is stored up. When this effects ends, you explode back into corporeality, dealing 126.77% (N) to 137.44% (M+WF) of the stored damage to all enemies within 10 yds, split evenly.

How it works:

When the trinket procs, you get a blue haze type aura around your screen and your character goes spectral. Any damage dealt during this time counts as an absorb. When the buff ends, whether cancelled or timed-out, the damage that was absorbed is multiplied by the modifier and exploded, splitting damage evenly to all targets within 10 yards.

Ex. You have the Normal version and do 500k damage during the 10s. At the end of the 10s you explode dealing 126.77% of the 500k or 633,850 damage split between all targets within 10y.

Note: It does not include SEF clone damage into the absorb. This means that if you have SEF clones out you will do less damage during the Spirit Shift buff, and hence explode for less.

When to use it:

Single target fights with little to no use of SEF where the boss is not a Demon. You can use it to “game” the explosion similar to the legendary ring. If you know you’re going to be able to do a ton of burst damage, then the trinket is great.

Ex. Kormrok: Hands spawn and you get the perfect timed proc. You spam Chi Burst and SCK, all the damage is absorbed, your raidmates kill the hands with their damage. The full fury of the explosion is left to do pure single target damage to Kormork.

It is also important to have a macro to cancel the buff if you will lose the explosion on the target for any reason: /cancelaura Spirit Shift . This will allow you more control over the buff so that you can cancel it and get the explosion when needed rather than waiting and possibly missing out.

Ex. Kormrok: You need to cancel your Spirit Shift before he jumps away, so you must watch timers more than if you didn’t use the trinket.

This trinket works beautifully with Touch of Death. So your ToD will add your health to the absorb and explode with the modifier, assuming the proc ends before the target is dead.

Soul Capacitor works very well, or very poorly with the Legendary Ring. A Spirit Shift during the Legendary Ring’s buff will receive the additional % damage increase from the ring as well as explode for the % modifier. However, any damage absorbed will not count toward the Ring’s explosion. Spirit Shift has to end before Maalus’s buff ends in order for the trinket’s modified explosion to count toward the Ring’s modified explosion.

Ex. Ideal world: Legendary ring procs, you toss up TEB and get an immediate Spirit Shift trinket proc. You go HAM and 10sec later the buff expires, exploding all your increased damage, further increased by the ring. Before the end of the Ring proc, Spirit Shift procs again, so the damage from the Ring’s explosion gets absorbed by the 2nd trinket proc, and later explodes after being increased AGAIN.

Mirror of the Blademaster

Where to get it:

Hellfire High Council

What it does:

On use: Summons 4 Mirror Images to attack your target and nearby enemies for 20 sec.

How it works:

Exactly like it says. When used, 4 copies of your character appear in a square around the target and begin to spin around, Bladestorm-esque. They will hit all targets in their range without splitting damage. However: they will not move once summoned, so any targets that move out of their range will no longer be hit.

Note: The difference in damage done by the Bladestorms between item level versions of this trinket is relatively small. If you can get your hands on any version of the trinket, the high ilvl versions aren’t as big of an upgrade more than the stats provided.

When to use it:

Any fight with additional targets that can be hit, assuming you’re comfortable with the fight and will be able to minimize the time your targets are out of the Bladestorm range. Fights like Hellfire High Council are relatively little movement, so Mirror is very strong there. A fight like Kormrok where he can jump out, or Archimonde with movement from fire, will require additional attention to get the most out of this trinket.

Malicious Censer

Where to get it:

Tyrant Velhari

What it does:

Standard proc – 1093 Agility (N) to 1528 Agility (M+WF) for 20sec

How it works:

Just like any other proccing trinket in the history of video games. Your abilities trigger a 20sec buff that provides additional Agility.

When to use it:

Any time one of the other trinkets would be insufficient due to strategy, fight design, or comfort level.

Ex.1 Mythic Gorefiend: You don’t want to hit unnecessary Souls, so this trinket is really your only option.

Ex.2 Archimonde: Too much SEF for Soul Capacitor, too much movement for some to be comfortable with Mirror of the Blademaster.

inv_misc_trinket6oog_tablet3 Infallible Tracking Charm

Where to get it:

Mythic Dungeons

What it does:

12,463 damage to your target and a buff that increases damage to Demons by 10% for 5 seconds.

How it works:

Just like any normal proc, the damage is done at the start of the buff and the buff persists for 5 seconds.

When to use it:

When the boss is a Demon, unless you kill the boss very quickly and its single target, like Zakuun, then use a Soul Capacitor.

It can also be used on non Demon fights if Mirror wouldn’t be of much use and you do not have an equal or higher ilvl Soul Capacitor,

  1. May I ask what trinkets you personally use in each encounter? It may be me overthinking it, but I’m having a hard time deciding between them for Gorefiend or Socrethar as an example.

    • I purposefully didnt include a per boss guide as the decisions rely heavily on comfort level with the fight and trinket as well as raid strategy. I use Censer for Reaver and Gorefiend, Soul Cap for Zakuun, and Mirror for everything else. However, Mirror isn’t an easy trinket to use on every encounter so you have to be confident in your ability with it and the fight.

      • I understand and respect the decision not to include trinkets in the guides, but it’s always helpful to have an idea of what I should ideally be doing (you can use Censer on Archi, but in an ideal world you’d master Mirror and use that instead).
        Anyway, thank you for answering.

PS I found your blog recently and I suck at theorycrafting, but write everything so clearly that even I can understand it and it’s been really helpful.

      • Glad it can be of help. Until recently I wasn’t really a theorycrafter so most of what I did was translate what others did into something that everyone can understand.

        thanks.

      • Malicious Censer or the Heirloom trinket when Soul Cap would be insufficient, likely due to SEF usage.

  2. Thoughts on new heirloom trinket?

    Like

    • It works very well now that it’s been fixed. It’s on par with heroic trinkets on average. It’s more consistent but has a lower ceiling than Soul Cap, less damage than Mirror but unaffected by movement, and slightly more effective than Malicious Censer.

It’s a good placeholder trinket till you get or learn to use another trinket that fits each fight better.

  3. I’ve got H mirror, H archi, boa, and a normal mode soul cap. For fights where you established soul cap to be insane, would a normal version suffice, or would it be better to use, say, the heirloom instead?

    Like

    • The heirloom will perform better on average, its on par with the heroic versions of the trinket.

      • I just got the heirloom the other day myself. I have normal archi, normal soul cap and normal censer, no mirror. Based on this last comment it seems i should use normal archi and my heirloom for every fight and not bother with my normal soul cap or normal censer? even in non demon fights the damage proc on it seems pretty solid.

I’ve killed council 11 times and had 10 bonus rolls on the fight and still no mirror. maybe with the heirloom i can give up on the mirror? 🙂

        Like

      • The heirloom is really only good with Demon fights, that’s the main part of the trinket. SEF clones also don’t copy the heirloom trinket so if you’re using SEF regularly then it’s better on average to stick with Censer and SDI.

  4. I was using the heirloom trinket and a Heroic mirror, but I just dropped a normal SC, Should I use a SC in the place of any of the other trinkets or should I stay with the same setup?

    Like

    • Soul Cap is good for non demon single target and short fights. If your group kills a fight like Zakuun quickly then it will be better than the heirloom trinket
